Welcome to the Cowles Montessori school website. We are so pleased to offer a Montessori style of learning for students in the Des Moines area. At Cowles, we believe in the powers of the individual child, drawing upon their inner motivation to learn. Classrooms are set up in multi-age groupings where they learn from each other and because of each other. With their constant interaction the children learn to take responsibility for themselves and each other. In this child-centered community, parents play a critical role in their child’s education. We encourage and welcome you to be involved in school activities, our Cowles Montessori Parent Group, and your child’s daily learning. I welcome parents to stop by anytime as I value your partnership in the education of students. Witnessing students’ success and growth is my greatest reward. I believe in the Montessori philosophy of guiding children’s natural curiosity and intrinsic motivation to learn and am committed to building on this to foster student achievement.
What is Cowles?
We thank the Des Moines Public School District for showing great support of Cowles, the only public Montessori in the state of Iowa. Cowles is unique with Montessori learning methods used within the classroom, however aligns with the Des Moines Public School essential curriculum for each grade level, school hours, and yearly calendar. Cowles houses ages 3 to eighth grade students who are open enrolled from districts all over the area. Often times we have a waiting list to enroll at Cowles.
